Dr E. Joy Bowles - a woman of passion...

Explaining how aromatherapy works is my abiding passion, focusing on the pharmacology and chemistry of essential oils and their interaction with human biology. I love sharing information, and seeing the 'Ah-hah!' moments ignite in my students' eyes...
2021 marked the thirtieth year of my involvement in aromatherapy - my very first lecture on essential oil chemistry was at Macquarie University in Sydney in September 1991, and apart from a 10 year hiatus after the birth of my son, I've been actively teaching, writing or researching since then!
Career highlights include:

Career highlights include:
- appearing in the Netflix docu-series "Un(Well)" (episode 1 - Essential Oils) where I was flown to New York to be filmed as the counter-balance of scientific rationality to some of the less rational elements in aromatherapy
- being awarded the Outstanding Contributor award by the Alliance of International Aromatherapists in 2021. The speaker said I was informational, inspirational and world-wide - an engaing teacher, speaker and leader... and best of all, finally, I feel I am worthy of that award (what a journey it's been!).
Current focus
My most well-known book is "The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Oils", in which I share my knowledge of what essential oils are from a chemical point of view and explore the many ways they interact with humans. The book has been used as a text in many aromatherapy colleges round the world. In 2020 I released "Dr Joy's Aromatherapy" which is my current statement on how I think aromatherapy should be used, with an emphasis on the evidence-base required for safe and effective use of essential oils. Both books are available on Amazon, or from my store - I'll even sign them for you, if you like.
As Dr E. Joy Bowles, PhD, BSc Hons, author, educator and speaker, I offer workshops and webinars on aromachemistry and pharmacology of essential oils, as well as leading the Aromatherapy Journal Club and a Facebook discussion group on essential oil ingestion. I also have a series of webinars on the Tisserand Institute (see External Webinars) on AromaChemistry.
My recorded webinar series available in my micro-college "EO-Education with Dr Joy" are:
How Essential Oils Work (12 sessions)
Refreshing Chemistry (2 modules - 5 and 12 sessions each)
Inside Aromatherapy (8 sessions)
are available through my teachable learning platform eo-education.teachable.com.
