A note from Dr Joy

Picture
I've been involved with aromatherapy since September 1991, starting out teaching The Chemistry of Essential oils. My students asked for a text book - and I wrote one - The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Oils - now in its 3rd edition, and translated into Portuguese for the Brazilian market.

In 2003-2006 I did a PhD to learn about research methodology - my topic was the effects of essential oils on cognitive function in dementia. At a 3% dilution, single daily applications of 2 mls of an essential oil lotion applied to necks of people with dementia did not improve their cognitive function compared to placebo or non-odour controls. The lotion contained essential oils shown to have acetylcholinesterase inhibiting properties in the laboratory. More research is needed!
Since 2017 I have been teaching online. I create courses and teach for the Tisserand Institute - use these links to enjoy Aromatic Chemistry, The Joy of Research and the Constituent Spotlight series.
I have been working to improve aromatherapy research reporting as co-founder of and collaborator with the Aromatherapy Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (ARQAT) https://arqat.org
